Ah, this painting is dear to my heart. I started this, as with many of my paintings, not knowing outwardly what or why I was painting it. I felt a strong inner need to do it.
At the time I was painting this humming bird, my sister Judith was dying from stage four breast cancer. She lived across the country from me and had no husband to look after her.
My sister and I would often visit to help her. Judith too was an artist. On our last trip, before she died, I learned that she loved humming birds. They gave her great joy. I finished the painting after her death. I then realized I was painting her spiritual journey from this world to the next. I named this Judith in her honor.
